So, we got some snow yesterday and through the night.
Not a whole lot, but enough to spruce up the Garden Studio.
The birds and squirrels seem to be loving it.

Back to the yard
It’s been a little while since I’ve started hollowing out pumpkins and using them as bird feeders.
To get the birds comfortable with the idea, I left the old feeder out for a few weeks. The birds would go from the old feeder to the pumpkins.
Once I felt they were used to feeding from the pumpkins, I removed the store-bought feeder and just left pumpkins out.
I gutted the pumpkins right in the feeding area, hoping attract a variety of birds and squirrels.
I’d say the whole concept and implementation has been a success. -
Capen Hill Nature Sanctuary
This weekend I went to the Capen Hill Nature Sanctuary to scout it out and see if there might be any interesting landscape or wildlife opportunities there. I had my wife with and since she doesn’t want to be on camera, I didn’t capture video of the trip. There really wasn’t much to see so it’s not a big loss. The location has a handful of trails that are easy to navigate but there is a building or parking garage under construction adjacent to the Sanctuary area and it’s very noisy. Probably why we didn’t find any wildlife.
I captured a few quick photos while traveling along the trails, but nothing I would consider printing. -
Constant Improvement
Today’s post is a follow-up to the previous post where I discussed the garden setup in my yard.
I have bird feeders in my yard with the intent of luring birds in so I can photograph them.
I set up some tree branches around the feeders so the birds can perch on natural surfaces, and so I can photograph them in what appears to be a more natural setting. As you can see here, the setting doesn’t appear all that natural when you take in the whole scene.
That’s the beauty of photography. If you use the right angle, and the right focal distance, you can turn this mess into something aesthetically pleasing.By zooming in a bit you lose most of the clutter and create something more pleasing.
Looking at this image, one can’t tell that this is a broken tree branch set up to look more natural.
Or that this Woodpecker is actually eating part of a Kind bar.
The blurred background hides the elements that I didn’t want to show in the image. All of these images are from the same area of my yard and in most cases, shot through a window (it’s cold outside)
This allows me to shoot from the comfort of my cozy sunroom, all nice a warm, while the outside temps were just above freezing. This is just a way to keep my interest in photography at the forefront in between trips to the forest. You know the old saying, always be photographing.
Okay, maybe that’s not a real saying, but it’s how I feel. It’s just a way to keep honing my craft during those times when I can’t get out to Photograph wildlife and landscapes.
