It’s been a little while since I’ve started hollowing out pumpkins and using them as bird feeders.
To get the birds comfortable with the idea, I left the old feeder out for a few weeks. The birds would go from the old feeder to the pumpkins.
Once I felt they were used to feeding from the pumpkins, I removed the store-bought feeder and just left pumpkins out.
I gutted the pumpkins right in the feeding area, hoping attract a variety of birds and squirrels.
I’d say the whole concept and implementation has been a success.

Setting up the shot
Photographing birds is something I enjoy tremendously.
It’s a form of meditation for me.
I get to relax, sit back, and take in the scenery. That’s the fun part, but sometimes a scene needs to be prepped.
For example, this Blue Jay is stealing a cashew from a branch I tied to a metal Shepard’s Crook plant hanger.
I wanted to present a more natural-looking scene.
I will often times take old broken branches and use them as feeding stations to get images that have a natural appearance, as opposed to photographing birds at a plastic or store-bought feeder. At some point, I’ll make a video showing how I set up shots using elements found in nature. Stay tuned.
